I need opinions

Here is an excerpt from T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland", easily one of my favorite poems of all time (call it pretentious, but it is what it is. I'm a slave to lushly dystopian imagery). Anyway, the poem is massively long, so I won't share it all here, but here's one of my favorite bits:


At the violet hour, when the eyes and back 215
Turn upward from the desk, when the human engine waits
Like a taxi throbbing waiting,
I Tiresias, though blind, throbbing between two lives,
Old man with wrinkled female breasts, can see
At the violet hour, the evening hour that strives 220
Homeward, and brings the sailor home from sea,
The typist home at tea-time, clears her breakfast, lights
Her stove, and lays out food in tins.
Out of the window perilously spread
Her drying combinations touched by the sun’s last rays, 225
On the divan are piled (at night her bed)
Stockings, slippers, camisoles, and stays.
I Tiresias, old man with wrinkled dugs
Perceived the scene, and foretold the rest—
I too awaited the expected guest. 230
He, the young man carbuncular, arrives,

Because awkward sex is fun and stuff.

Anyway, I NEED OPINIONS!!!

Its sort of a goal of mine to make little arts of the entire poem at some point before I die (and yes, I have only gotten as far as the Sybil and "April is the cruellest month") So, what sort of art media would you envision this scene in? Collage? Cartoon? Sketch? Painting? Mixed media? I know I want to tackle it, I just don't know how.

Walnut Bread


This started out as a recipe for poppyseed bread, but I couldn't find any poppyseed at the grocery store, so I substituted walnuts. That makes sense, right?

Ingredients: 
3 cups flour
2 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/8 cups oil
3 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds (or in my case, one bag of walnuts)
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
1 1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring (I skipped this)

** Mix all together, pour into greased loaf pans (I had to use a pan for making squares, as my loaf pans seem to have gone MIA on me)

Glaze: 
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring (I skipped this again)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond

**mix well and pour over the hot bread, allow to cool.

This turned out really moist and quite tasty :D

Eggplant and Olive Fettuccine

So, my beloved sister is a vegetarian. The rest of the family is not. Nevertheless, I decided to go for a vegetarian main dish when I threw together a family dinner for us on Saturday. So, here is what I made:

Eggplant and Olive Fettuccine


1 bag fettuccine
1 jar green olives (I chose stuffed with garlic)
1 eggplant
enough olive oil to coat the pasta
about 4 tablespoons lemon juice
two tablespoons sugar if the eggplant has a bitter taste, as it sometimes does
enough Parmesan to coat pasta (I used about half a small bag of grated Parmesan)
a bunch of chopped parsley

Pretty straightforward recipe. Set fettuccine to boil, chop up eggplant and olives, begin to lightly grill the eggplant in some of the oil until it is tender, stirring in the olives at some point. Add lemon juice and sugar to the eggplant and olive mixture, as well as more oil, and then toss with the cooked fettuccine. Add Parmesan and chopped parsley and toss again. I used a tomato for garnish to jazz it up a bit.

Concert Night!


On Friday after I got in to Saskatoon, we went to a combined indie concert held at an Anglican church. Although the crowd is maybe not "my crowd", all three bands were good. I was already familiar with Andy Shauf's work, and the Fisticuffs and the Jordan Klassen band wowed me. This latter in particular did some very interesting things with their art. All three bands had a pleasant folksy feel, with Andy Shauf being the most mellow, Jordan Klassen's band being the most upbeat and up-tempo (though you wouldn't know that listening to the EP, lol), and the Fisticuffs falling somewhere in between. For anyone interested, I'm going to post a couple examples of the music we listened to.

The Dark Tower, or "A Study on Love/Obsession"


The Dark Tower, or “A Study on Love/Obsession”

Stevie and I have often joked that I could teach a Doctorate Level class on The Dark Tower Saga.  Oft referred to as Stephen King’s “Magnum Opus,” the Dark Tower has kept the Constant Reader entertained for the better part of three decades. 

 Spanning seven (well, eight, as of yesterday) volumes, short stories, tie-ins and a host of Marvel published comic books, it drew me in immediately.  I was fascinated by All-World, and the connections to our world.  The things that fell through the cracks, like the George Washington Bridge, or a Citgo pumping station.  The bizarre mixture of reality and unreality appealed to me in a way that no other book had – and I’m a long time fan of King.  Based largely on part in Robert Browning’s epic poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” it is ultimately a tale of redemption, and of regaining lost love.

For those that wish to read, I’ll include the text of Browning’s poem here.  If you don’t, then skip over it:

I.
My first thought was, he lied in every word,
That hoary cripple, with malicious eye
Askance to watch the working of his lie
On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford
Suppression of the glee, that pursed and scored
Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby.
II.
What else should he be set for, with his staff?
What, save to waylay with his lies, ensnare
All travellers who might find him posted there,
And ask the road? I guessed what skull-like laugh
Would break, what crutch 'gin write my epitaph
For pastime in the dusty thoroughfare,

If at his counsel I should turn aside
Into that ominous tract which, all agree,
Hides the Dark Tower. Yet acquiescingly
I did turn as he pointed: neither pride

So, on I went. I think I never saw
Such starved ignoble nature; nothing throve:
For flowers---as well expect a cedar grove!

Then came a bit of stubbed ground, once a wood,
Next a marsh, it would seem, and now mere earth
Desperate and done with; (so a fool finds mirth,
Makes a thing and then mars it, till his mood

Now blotches rankling, coloured gay and grim,

What in the midst lay but the Tower itself?
The round squat turret, blind as the fool's heart,
Built of brown stone, without a counter-part
In the whole world. The tempest's mocking elf
Points to the shipman thus the unseen shelf
He strikes on, only when the timbers start.

Not see? because of night perhaps?---why, day
Came back again for that! before it left,
The dying sunset kindled through a cleft:
The hills, like giants at a hunting, lay,
Chin upon hand, to see the game at bay,---
``Now stab and end the creature---to the heft!''

Not hear? when noise was everywhere! it tolled
Increasing like a bell. Names in my ears
Of all the lost adventurers my peers,---
How such a one was strong, and such was bold,
And such was fortunate, yet, each of old
Lost, lost! one moment knelled the woe of years.

There they stood, ranged along the hill-sides, met
To view the last of me, a living frame
For one more picture! in a sheet of flame
I saw them and I knew them all. And yet
Dauntless the slug-horn to my lips I set,
And blew. ``Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came.''


See?  Fucking long.  I should take this time, to say that I *hate* epic poetry.  I can’t read it, it makes no sense to me, but given that I love the story that was extrapolated from it, I felt compelled to read it.  
Enough of this shit, back to our regularly scheduled program.
I have to thank my Baby Sister, for introducing me to The Dark Tower.  One Christmas, she bought me The Dark Tower II:  The Drawing of The Three.  I read it, and immediately was taken.  I devoured “DT:I” and “DT:III” as fast as I could, and then I stumbled across the same frustration that every would-be Gunslinger felt:
STEPHEN KING PUBLISHES THE BOOKS AT EXTREMELY IRREGULAR INTERVALS!
According to Wikipedia the books were published in these years:
Series
4.    The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass (1997)—Locus Award nominee, 1998[8]
5.    The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla (2003)—Locus Award nominee, 2004[9]

You’ll notice, that books 5, 6, and 7 were published back to back.  It is here, that I diverge into the meaning of 19.
“It’s All Nineteen”
This has become a catchphrase of sorts, with Stevie and I.  A way of saying, “Everything is going according to plan, even if it’s not the plan we planned.” – if you dig.   It’s all Nineteen. 
The occurance of this number arose in The Dark Tower V: The Wolves of the Calla.  The significance is this:

On June 19, 1999 at about 4:30 p.m., King was walking on the shoulder of Route 5, in Lovell, Maine. Driver Bryan Smith, distracted by an unrestrained dog moving in the back of his minivan, struck King, who landed in a depression in the ground about 14 feet from the pavement of Route 5.[15] According to Oxford County Sheriff deputy Matt Baker, King was hit from behind and some witnesses said the driver was not speeding, reckless, or drinking.[32]  (http://en.wikipedia.og/wiki/Stephen_King)

King had treated The Dark Tower as a retreat until that point.  A place for him to go, to feel at home.  It wasn’t until this accident, that he realized that he owed a debt to those of us who had followed the Ka-Tet over the years.  Now, keep in mind, I don’t believe that any writer owes a single thing to his or her readers.  Write because you have to.  Not because you want a paycheck, or to make people happy.  I think he realized, finally . . . that the “Mean-Ass Patrol Boy” finally caught up with him.  As timeless as his works are (I fully believe that he will be taught alongside Shakespear, Dickens, Poe, and Hemmingway regularly in the future,) he is not.  I started reading The Dark Tower when I was seventeen (not quite nineteen).  I’m thirty-five now, and I’m noticing the gray in my hair.  I’m noticing the wrinkles where there were none.  However, as I recently learned, I will not fight my Patrol Boy.  I’ll embrace him.  I’ll learn from him – and hopefully, I’ll grow old with him.  He was introduced to me on September 21, 2005 (not June 19, 1999, but I met him all the same).  That fuck had a handful of chips with my name on them, but decided to not cash in.  Instead, he said, “Let’s see what this kid can do” – at twenty-eight, I was stuck forever at nineteen. 

Back on topic: 

September 21 was the release date for The Dark Tower VII:  The Dark Tower.  One of my three best friends brought a copy to the ICU, after I met my Patrol Boy, and left it there for me to read – not that I remember it, thank you Demerol.  I cheered, I screamed, I cried, and basically made the nurses think I was going batshit insane.  However, going back to All-World, and living with The Ka-Tet gave me a chance to heal.  It let me fade inside myself, and find a place where I could start healing. 

I should add, I remember nothing of my first reading of that book.  I had to go back months later, and read again.  I only remember telling the nurses all about it, as if the characters were real.  As if they were my friends.  To me, they were.  They still are.  Roland, Jake, Eddie, Susannah, and Oy, sweet Oy.  They were as much my friends, as my true friends who came to visit me were.  I’ll paraphrase King here, in that I followed Jake’s story longer than he’d been alive.  They weren’t just characters to me.  I knew them, as well as I knew myself.  I knew immediately why Jake understood “The Truth,”, and I knew about “The Great Sage and Eminent Junkie.”   I knew Detta Walker, and the dark recesses of that hateful bitches mind.  That being said, it wasn’t until Roland climbed the Tower, that I truly understood him.  I understood that he was a man whose regret was always in the fore of his mind. And I was the same.  I still regret the things I did in the past, but that is part of who I am.  It’s shaped me, and as unsavory as those things are, I wouldn’t change them.  I was once taken with addiction, and later a love of “Graf”.  

It’s still part of who I am. 

I realize now, that this has turned from a post into the Greatness (yes, big “G”,) of the Tower, into self reflection.   I simply want to say, that after I’ve rambled on this far, I truly thank my friends – Roland, Eddie, Jake, Susannah, Oy, Stephen King, Joshua, Jeremy, and Mitchell, for truly saving my life.
